WELCOME TO
THE WEST TYRONE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
WEBSITE

In line with advice on social isolation the West Tyrone Historical Society committee have decided to postpone the last two meetings of this season (March and April) and to cancel the May and June outings. Hopefully, we should be able to start afresh with the meetings in September.

The society was started in 1981.

The society membership

West Tyrone Historical Society's members mostly come from Omagh and the surrounding villages and countryside. Omagh is the county town of Tyrone and other towns and villages include Strabane, Newtownstewart, Ardstraw, Castlederg, Fintona, Plumbridge, Gortin, Drumquin, Dromore, Trillick, Carrickmore and Beragh.

The society organises monthly lectures and occasional outings to places of historic interest. The lectures are held at 8.00pm, usually on the last Wednesday of the month, in the library of the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies at the Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh. New members are always welcome.

Membership of the society is open to everyone, especially those who are interested in history, folklore and/or archaeology. Annual membership is £10 for a family or £7 for an individual.

Further details of events and information about the society may be obtained from The Secretary, W.T.H.S,

Objectives of the Society

  1. The study and encouragement of public interest in the history, folklore, archaeology and antiquities of the area.
  2. The publication of occasional research papers on the above topics and the establishment of a society archive.
